Phasmophobia Coming to the Big Screen

ree

Early hours this morning, Kinetic Games announced on Twitter that they are developing a Phasmophobia movie in collaboration with none other than horror film royalty, Blumhouse!

“Today we are excited to announce that a feature film adaptation of #Phasmophobia is officially in development by horror film powerhouse, @Blumhouse”

Yes, that Blumhouse! The studio that brought us the Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) movie and its highly anticipated sequel. Plus, the likes of M3GAN, Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Halloween, to name a few. If there's any studio that knows how to turn a hit horror game into a chilling box office experience, it’s them.

What is Phasmophobia?

Well, in case you have been hiding in a salt circle for the last few years, Phasmophobia is a horror game (best played with friends) where you and up to three friends investigate haunted locations to identify the type of ghost lurking inside. Using tools like EMF readers, spirit boxes, and UV flashlights to help you correctly identify your new (not so friendly) ghost friend. You can even communicate with the ghost through an Ouija board and other "cursed objects", which you get 1 of each game (randomised each game)

Your cursed object could be:

  • The Ouija board

  • Music Box

  • Voodoo Doll

  • Tarot Cards

  • Summoning Circle

  • A Haunted Mirror

Sounds fun, right?

What Could the Movie be Like?

Details of the movie are still tightly under wraps, but knowing Blumhouse, it will be sure that they will stay true to the game!

Expect something in the realm of:

  • A small group of ghost hunters

  • A few haunted houses, possibly an asylum (Sunny Meadows) or a Lighthouse that is way more cursed than expected

  • Creepy, slow-building tension mixed with terrifying jump scares (we've all jumped at a ghost event once or twice)

  • The anticipation of watching to see if your favourite character manages to escape the hunt

Think paranormal activity but with the flavour of Phasmophobia's eerie silence, sudden ghost appearances, and group dynamics where the walkie-talkie cuts out right when you need it most.

Final Thoughts

Phasmophobia has had a massive impact on the indie horror gaming scene since its early access launch in 2020. It's built a cult following thanks to its atmospheric scares, co-op fun, constant updates, and its recent launch on console in October of last year. Seeing it cross over into film means it's joining the ranks of over beloved horror game franchises like FNAF and Silent Hill.

And with Blumhouse taking the lead? We've got high hopes. These are the team that knows how to create suspense, deliver frights, and stay true to the fan base. They have also shown recently that they really do listen to fan feedback, with the recent announcement that they're taking reviews of the first FNAF movie to heart and plan to include more gore in the sequel.

We don't have an official release date or an idea of which year we will see this movie yet, but hearing that it is in the works has got me really excited!

So, whether you're a seasoned ghost hunter in the game (apocalypse gold trophy holders stand up!) or just love a good haunting on the big screen, Phasmophobia is shaping up to be an exciting horror announcement of the year.

Let's hope the cast remembers to bring their crucifixes.

QUESTION: Who would be in your dream Phasmophobia Movie cast?
