For nearly a year, some of the most iconic voices in gaming have gone silent. But now, they're officially back. The SAG-AFTRA strike involving video game voice actors has ended, and it's a huge moment, not just for the industry but for all of us who fall in love with beloved video game characters, from the emotions to the utter chaos they bring to our games!
What was the Strike for?
SAG-AFTRA (The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) represent the people behind the characters we laugh with, cry for and scream at. In 2024, the union called for better pay and, critically, AI protections.
Studios wanted more control over actors' digital likenesses, meaning voices or performances could be reused or generated by AI without consent.
What did the Actors Win?
After tough negotiations, SAG-AFTRA secured major wins, such as:
15% pay rise, with yearly increases through 2027
AI protections that ensure actors can't be digitally cloned or used without explicit approval
Improved working conditions for long recording sessions
This agreement doesn't just support voice actors, it helps keep our games human, immersive and emotionally rich.
Voice acting makes the emotions hit harder, whether they are happy or sad, you feel a closer connection with the character
Let's Support the Talent that Makes Games Great
Next time you load into a match or explore a new cosy sim, take a second to appreciate the real people who bring these characters to life, and now they're safer and more empowered to do so.
Question of the day...
What voice actor or character changed a game for you?
Mine is Ashley Johnson's performance in The Last of Us Part I & II
